About Us

Byrraju Foundation was set up in July 2001 in memory of Late Byrraju Satyanarayana Raju, an agriculturist cum successful businessman hailing from the West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. A large-hearted philanthropist, Satyanarayana Raju believed in the development of villages and the progress of villagers. His philanthropy consisted of numerous direct charitable donations to thousands of needy people, which helped transform their lives.

 

His three sons, Ramalinga Raju, Suryanarayana Raju and Rama Raju set up Byrraju Foundation, in his memory, within a week of his demise on June 27, 2001.

The Vision was to transform thousands of villages in a structured, professional manner. And in a record time of few months, the first village centres were set up and the BRF services were kick-started in 50 villages. BRF rapidly expanded its operation to cover 200 villages, running 40 diverse programs, touching all aspects of rural life. Byrraju Foundation is an organisation dedicated to Rural Transformation, founded with the sole intent of rapidly transforming millions of lives living in poverty, in 6,00,000 villages in India.

Our story so far spans 18 years and so is the journey of transforming two million lives in 200 villages in Andhra Pradesh, India.

What made us an outstanding success is the visionary leadership and passion for creating the best of solutions for social benefit and the highly committed and competent Byrraju team’s excellence in execution and scaling.

Our Journey

Our story spans over 18 years, it is the journey of transformation of two million rural lives in 200 villages of Andhra Pradesh. This is a journey of a unique social experiment, which combined the best of technology and management practices leading to many path-breaking programs, large-scale impact, and the ripple effect of emulation by others.

Evolution of Byrraju Foundation (BRF)

BRF’s evolution, from 2001 till 2019, has happened over three very distinctly different phases

We have designated these three evolving models of BRF as:

BRF 1.0: 2001 to 2009 – Inception and Rapid Growth
BRF 2.0: 2010 to 2018 – Economic Sustainability and Consolidation
BRF 3.0: 2019 onwards – NewAge Technology Platform-driven Rural Empowerment

BRF 1.02001 - 2009

Inception and Rapid Growth

  • Started in 2001, BRF rapidly expanded its operation to cover 200 villages, running 40 diverse programs, touching all aspects of rural life and impacting over 2 million people
  •  
    BRF's unique approach has been acclaimed across the world as the most innovative, holistic, large-scale rural transformation model
  •  
    The primary focus was on achieving a high level of community acceptance and social sustainability, before aiming for 100% economic sustainability
  •  
    BRF incubated path-breaking social enterprises like 108 and 104, which rapidly scaled as very successful PPP models nationwide
  •  
    BRF operated 4 BPOs in villages with a population of less than 3000. Each BPO employed more than 100 rural youth, mostly women
  •  
    BRF successfully partnered and collaborated with over 150 organisations for the optimum leveraging of knowledge, best practices and resources, for implementing many joint programs in all the adopted villages, creating maximum impact and scalability with minimum resources
  •  
    BRF is the first sizeable Not-for-Profit organisation in the world, which has adopted Six Sigma methodologies across the organisation as the primary method for continuous process improvement
  •  
    BRF is the first organisation to set up large-scale rural BPOs in small villages
BRF 2.02010 - 2019

Economic Sustainability and Consolidation

    • The focus shifted to economic sustainability and consolidation

 

    • Only core programs continued, no new programs or villages were added

 

    • Over 120 villages became self-sufficient, with no external or additional funding

 

    • Impact numbers declined, though BRF's regular customers for water and health continued to avail the services

 

    • For health programs, CARE Foundation became an active partner and ran the BRF health centres from 2010 till 2019

    • BRF water plants continued to run in 30 villages

 

The tremendous goodwill generated by BRF among rural communities remained undiminished, despite no expansion.

BRF 3.02019 Onwards

NewAge Technology Platform-driven Rural Empowerment

  • The context and priorities of rural development changed radically between 2009 and 2018, because by then the dark phase of poverty had mostly been eradicated in BRF's adopted villages. The Indian rural 'existential dilemma' has shifted from the struggle for mere survival and 'living on the edge' to a new era of aspiration and opportunity

  • Larger earning capacity is triggering growth in the rural economy, leading to larger rural demand for all types of services and products. After meeting all its basic needs, rural India is showing its large appetite for meeting many more of its aspirational needs

  • The donor-beneficiary paradigm has changed. Villages are not looking for charity; instead, they value their dignity more and want to be empowered. Therefore, BRF has rediscovered itself and re-engineered its Model to meet contemporary and rapidly evolving rural needs

Verghese K Jacob

Chief Integrator
An Electronics Engineer, with MBA from XLRI, Verghese K Jacob excelled in the corporate world for over 20 years heading key divisions, businesses and functions of major corporate houses such as Godrej as Director/CEO/Advisor. He also has 18 years of leadership experience in the social sector, supporting many foundations and causes. As the Chief Integrator of the Foundation, Verghese spearheads all the major programs, drives strategy and key alliances and mentors all the senior leaders.

Integrator-field Operations
After a 20-year stint with the State Bank of India in senior management positions, Bhaskaram Raju made a strategic career-shift to the social sector and joined BRF in 2002. He is based out of Bhimavaram and with his vast experience and people management skills, he oversees BRFs field staff and the implementation of all programs in our adopted villages. Bhaskaram holds bachelor's degrees in science and law. His hobbies include music and reading. His immense ability to collaborate very effectively with all our village communities and thereby mobilize grassroot support for our programs is his greatest strength.
Dr. Prathap Reddy K

Dr. Prathap Reddy K

Agriculture
Dr. Reddy is Advisor (Agriculture Byrraju Foundation, a tech savvy NGO in Hyderabad) on part-time & Former Director, IRMA, Anand, Gujarat. Prof. Reddy did his PhD (FPM) from IIM, Ahmedabad, and MSc and BSc in Agriculture from AP Agricultural University. Has over 43 years of experience in research, consultancy, teaching and training in agri-business and rural development management; designed and conducted over 30 different types of training programmes; Conducted over 30 consultancy projects for both national and international agencies like FAO, UNICEF, World Bank, Netherland Embassy, Government of India and some state governments. He has published four edited books and over 50 papers and book chapters and guided/guiding 17 PhD Management Students of IFHE (ICFAI) University. Dr. Reddy was on the Boards of several institutions in the past and is at present Chairman, Board of Directors of Dhruva College of Management, Hyderabad; Member of Academic Council, Research Committee & PhD Committee at IFHE (ICFAI) University, Hyderabad: Board Member of SAIRD-KVK, Gaddipally and Academic Director (Honorary), Aditya Global Business School, Kakinada.
Mastan Babu P

Mastan Babu P

Disability, Healthcare Support services
Mastan babu is a postgraduate in Social work from Acharya Nagarjuna University. He has more than 16 Years' of experience in social sector, handling Implementation of rural health programs, medical camps/special events, training, and supply chain management. Prior to joining Byrraju BRF he was done implementation of various community-based programs in the field of Sanitation, Women Empowerment, Rural Livelihoods & Skill Development.
